New ROG Ally Update Delivers Smoother Gameplay And Longer Battery

ASUS has released an unexpected software update for its handheld gaming console, the ROG Ally, resulting in significant improvements in overall performance, battery efficiency, and frame rates in popular games. Although the sudden jump in capability appears dramatic, the transformation is the result of a series of updates gradually rolled out by ASUS and Microsoft. Together, these updates have strengthened the device far beyond its launch state, effectively giving it what some users describe as an “invisible hardware upgrade.”

The technology channel ETA Prime drew attention to these enhancements by comparing the original ROG Ally with the newer ROG Ally X after both devices received the latest rounds of updates. In multiple game tests, titles showed frame-rate increases between 15% and 20%, all while maintaining the same TDP and usage profiles. This means the console is achieving notably smoother gameplay without raising power consumption, an important factor for open-world and racing games where frame stability is crucial.

A key factor behind these improvements is version 2.1.15.0 of the Asus Command Center SE, released in November for the entire Ally lineup, including Xbox-branded variants. This update integrates AMD Radeon Chill with ASUS’s own FPS limiter. Radeon Chill dynamically reduces power draw during less demanding scenes, helping extend battery life without compromising responsiveness in more intense moments.

For the ROG Ally X, the update introduces an additional optimization: CPU core parking. This feature temporarily disables specific CPU cores in scenarios where they are not needed, reducing thermal load and allowing the Radeon 890M GPU to operate more efficiently. ETA Prime’s benchmarks demonstrate that with core parking enabled, the handheld can run Forza Horizon 5 approximately 18% faster at a fixed TDP of 18 W. This provides a substantial performance boost, particularly for users running the device while plugged into a charger or power bank and trying to avoid excessive power usage.

User reports from early adopters of the updates indicate not only smoother gameplay but also noticeably improved battery life, with devices lasting longer under similar usage conditions than before. These combined enhancements suggest that ASUS’s ongoing software refinement, along with Microsoft’s system-level optimizations, has meaningfully elevated the ROG Ally’s competitiveness in the handheld gaming market—achieving performance gains typically associated with hardware revisions, all through software alone.
