As audiences rave over It: Welcome to Derry, the two It films that preceded it may make a comeback.
During a recent Reddit AMA, director Andy Muschietti was asked about his previously discussed “extended cut” that combined his duology into a single (and pretty long) movie. He first talked about this back in 2019 prior to It Chapter Two, and here he said that cut is “still a big dream of mine. We haven’t had time to execute it since we’ve been involved heavily in this show, [but] fingers crossed.”
Years ago, Muschietti revealed he’d been working on various cuts of the It duology, some of which contained deleted and wholly new scenes not from the book. One such new scene was the entity’s origin centuries ago, which he said at the time was cut due to being “a little confusing” and too revealing for that movie. Still, he’s held onto it, and we’ve seen that origin (and the entity taking over poor ol’ Bob Gray) across this season of Welcome to Derry.
Muschietti didn’t say anything further about the supercut in the AMA With the first It hitting its 10th birthday in 2017, a supercut of the two movies wouldn’t be a bad idea. The “Bloody Affair” cut of the Kill Bill movies and the upcoming extended Lord of the Rings re-releases have gotten audiences used to seeing longer films than normal, which may help Muschietti’s chances of getting it out in theaters or on HBO Max. We’ll just have to wait and see about that, ditto whether Welcome to Derry returns for another season.
